Biography:

I was born and raised on the land where I currently live. It is my grandfather Thomas Yule’s homestead. He came here from Scotland in the eighteen hundreds and fought in the not so civil war. He had undergone apprenticeships in both blacksmithery and wood work.
Here on Catahoula Lake was a very primitive atmosphere in which to be raised. However, we were not aware of that, until we went away to see the bright lights of civilization. My brother and I both volunteered for the military, shortly after the Pearl Harbor incident.
My Pa James Yule Sr. owned two different duck hunting camps here on the Sandridge, on the west side of the Catahoula. He was a great craftsman. He made boats, gunstocks, plows, houses and duck calls. His brother, Will Yule was very talented too. Their calls inspired me to try my hand at the same. The hunters who frequented the hunting lodges added to this with their fancy hunting equipment.
I was little more than a baby when duck call making became a must. My crude efforts often wound up in the fire place or the fire box of the cook stove. Any tubular object like native bamboo, elderberry, or seine floats fell victim to my knife.
These efforts continued even during my military days, and persist to even the present time. Who knows, if I continue to try, I may learn how to make a presentable and functional product.
