Mike Nelson
Biography:
I began making calls in 1985. There is no history of call making in my family or friends. I get a good laugh when I think about my first attempts at making a call. There was a lot of trial and error, mostly error. After many years of practice, I began selling calls in 1995.
I make hunting calls, double-reed in the Louisiana Style. I believe the double reed calls have a more realistic duck sound and are easier to blow. When ducks have heard all the calls from Canada to Catahoula, you better be able to produce a sound like a duck.
After trying just about every foreign and domestic wood, I settled on cocobola—it looks, turns, and sounds excellent. I make plain, brass-banded, and checkered calls. I also make wood duck calls, pintail-teal whistles, and speck calls. I make about 50-75 calls a year, and they are sold at outdoor shows or by phone orders.
The thing I like best about making calls is the people I meet, both call makers and duck hunters. Call or come by and visit.
