Winston Guillory
Biography:
I was born in SW Louisiana, and raised mostly in Louisiana but some in central Mississippi, (1969 – 1975). After high school, I moved back to Louisiana and married in 1976 then started working in the oilfield. I made my first duck call from an old broom stick in 1977, while working as a motorman on an offshore drilling rig. Then I made more for my co-workers and friends. I had a span of about 11 years that I did not make any, then started back up in 2003.
I did not sell any calls until 2003. I currently make from 150 to over 200 calls a year. Many are sold on Ebay and the others are sold by word of mouth and given as gifts to customers that buy leather goods from me.
I try to keep the Cajun tradition alive in my calls. All my calls are made one at a time without a duplicator. All my cane calls are made from locally grown cane. I make calls from hardwoods and exotic woods alike. I make all my soundboards one at a time by hand without the use of a jig. Some of my calls are similar to the old style calls from the 1940’s and 1950’s, and the other styles are my own design. At present, I am teaching my oldest grandson, (12 years old), the trade of call making. He has already completed 1 call and working on his second call. I am working on a web site and will update when it is up and running.
